“This is a waste of time,” grouses former IRS Commissioner Sheldon Cohen during the key interview in Aaron Russo's amazing documentary America: From Freedom to Fascism. “Whatever I say you won't believe.”
Cohen, who is now General Counsel to the IRS, had been pinned down by Russo's polite but persistent cross-examination regarding The Question That Must Not Be Answered: What is the specific, explicit statute that requires Americans to pay taxes on their labor and earnings?
Russo, like any rational being who believes in individual freedom, is not inclined to believe unsupported assertions of power from government functionaries. Like any patriotic American, Russo is prepared to obey the law, however onerous or objectionable, as long as it can be clearly explained to him.
