NEW YORK (CNN) -- President Bush isn't the only lame duck in our nation's capital. All 435 congressmen are up for re-election next year, and so are 34 of our senators. That's a total of 469 lame ducks, the way I see it. It's beginning to look like the American people may finally have had a bellyful of elected officials who do little more than shill for lobbyists, ignore the interests of America's citizens and perpetuate rather than solve the problems facing this nation.

Could it be that we are seeing the awakening of the American people to the political charade that has been perpetrated for too many years by both political parties in Washington? We must do more than hope. Read more here.

I've been a blogger for years and my Technorati account dates back to March of 2004. But, I've never seen anything like the sustained presence of Ron Paul in the Technorati top search terms. The Paris Hiltons and iPhones come and go and YouTube is almost always at the top. But a politician? When has that ever happened before? According to a Technorati spokesman, never.

As for comparable searches on potential presidential candidates, interestingly enough, there aren't any. Ron Paul has had the longest stint in our top searches out of all candidates. Mike Gravel had a quick stint, he's another grass-roots Web campaigner. But aside from that and a few blips when Obama, Clinton, and Edwards uploaded YouTube videos or after the debates, Ron Paul has been the most sustained top search for political candidates.

About the sustained trajectory of Ron Paul's popularity in the blogosphere, here's what Technorati's spokesman had to say:

"Ron Paul" was relatively unsearched-for term, until...

-May 4, when he became a popular (but not top) search.

THEN on...May 8, his popularity quadrupled and he became an official top search (thus entering the online zeitgeist, you might say), all building up to May 15-16, when he became really really hot (peaking on the 16th), and has since been enjoying a steady stream of searches. Read more here.

A local TV station just called, wanting to follow up on the Sunday ABC interview. Their stated reason: "Your campaign is really picking up steam!"

Darn right, thanks to you and so many others. Of course, some in the media want to see this campaign lose steam. But they’re not going to get their way.

I know that every day: for example, whenever I attend one of our big, enthusiastic meetup groups.

As I look around, I always think: how lucky I am to be part of such a movement. And how many young people care deeply about our ideas.

A friend of mine used to wonder what would become of our movement when all the older members of it passed on. Now, he says, there is no doubt that we are sowing the seeds of an even more vibrant and principled freedom movement. The future can be bright indeed.

At a rally in Nevada the other day, I asked a husband and wife how they had gotten interested in this campaign. "Though our 13-year-old son," they told me.

Remember the complaints that kids were addicted to TV and video games, and ignored the world around them? There are plenty who don't fit that bill. And the tool in their hands and ours is the internet. With it, we can circumvent the biased media.

Later this week I go to Google—perhaps the nerve center of the internet—at the company's invitation, to talk to all their employees. Brilliant young techies are part of our constituency, and I am looking forward to that visit. There are two rallies too.

This past weekend I debated Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul on the war in Iraq. The event was FreedomFest, the annual libertarian gathering in Las Vegas, with C-Span and about a thousand people in attendance. It was billed as a Libertarian v. Conservative debate: Larry Abraham and Dinesh D'Souza for the conservative side, and Doug Casey and Ron Paul for the libertarian side.

So here is question for Ron Paul: shouldn't the United States do what it can to promote liberty worldwide? I posed this question and Paul answered that America should be an example of liberty and not try to impose freedom by force. Alas, where freedom has come to countries it has usually come by force. At the invitation of that great capitalist enterprise, Ron Paul will tour the Google campus on Friday, July 13, make a YouTube, and deliver a company-wide address to all employees, in person and by streaming video around the world. It is rumored that after Hillary Clinton's unfortunate appearance, the Paulists at Google--apparently a huge group--asked for Ron. Of course, he has by far the best record in DC on protecting the web and web companies from federal meddling. I'll be tagging along, and will live photoblog from this historic event. It's not because Congressman Ron Paul is getting married. He and his wife Carol celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in February of this year. It's because a young couple in southern California is getting married in August. And that's why Dr. Paul will be receiving wedding gifts. Douglas Blair, a campaign staffer, explains:

We were at the campaign headquarters one night recently when a call came in from a young lady in southern California. She told me she had been visiting friends, and had chanced to see Ron Paul speak at the Uptown Theater in Kansas City on June 15. The caller was so impressed by what she had heard that not only was she going to vote for Dr. Paul, but wanted to do everything she could to see him become president.

She really wasn't kidding.

After asking for the website address for the campaign's donation page, she then proceeded to tell this astonished staffer that it was because she was "getting married in August, and wanted to have wedding guests donate to Ron Paul's presidential campaign instead of bringing gifts."

"My honey and I are willing to forego all manner of housewares and kitchen gadgets to help Ron Paul get elected," she laughed. "My mom doesn't know what to think, but I really want him to win -- it's that important to me." Read more.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has decided to abandon net neutrality and allow telecoms companies to charge websites for access. The FTC said in a report that, despite popular support for net neutrality, it was minded to let the market sort out the issue.

This means that the organisation will not stand in the way of companies using differential pricing to make sure that some websites can be viewed more quickly than others. The report also counsels against net neutrality legislation. Click here for more.

The Real NewsOne of our neighbors is moving. I've been in this neighborhood for about six years now, but didn't really know them very well at all - just waves and nods, mostly.

So I heard the moving van pull up this morning. When I got home this evening I happened to spy my neighbor (he's like 85 years old - I don't know exactly, but he's old, talks and moves very slowly) standing on the sidewalk next to the van. I walked over and shook his hand, and we started talking. I asked him where he was moving, and he said, "Back to Germany."

I had been stationed in Germany for two years while in the military, so I lit up, and commented about how beautiful the country was, and inquired if he was going back because he missed it.

"No," he answered me. "I'm going back because I've seen this before." He then commenced to explain that when he was a kid, he watched with his family in fear as Hitler's government committed atrocity after atrocity, and no one was willing to say anything. I was watching Gandhi recently, as I do every year or two. It is inspirational to me. It tells the story of a man who could not possibly win the battles he chose to fight, but did anyway. There is no doubt that it is a propaganda film, funded in part by the Indian government. It scrambles his chronology. But, on the whole, it got the story right. Mohandas K. Gandhi, a lawyer, was able to transform Indian politics. He did this through force of moral character and shrewd tactics that made every official response either "Damned if we do; damned if we don't." I read "The Gandhi Nobody Knows" when it was published in 1983, a year after the movie was released. I know the strange side of the man. But he mobilized a huge nation without recourse to violence. The regime that controls America may be getting a bit nervy because the New Hampshire primary is the first, and on its stage stands Ron Paul, a candidate for president, who is on record saying he cannot find the law that Ed is demanding to see and that Ed is a true patriot. All this might explode into the light of day as armed citizens surrounded by tyranny and a candidate for president share the same agenda, at the same time, in the same place.

Way back in 2001, Robert Shultz, chairman of the We the People Foundation, went on a fast to force our government to "show us the law." As he grew weaker, Bush finally authorized the heads of the IRS and Justice Department to meet with the foundation at the National Press Club. Our president then announced a sudden interest in studying alternative taxation systems, including disposal of the entire current tax code (New York Times, July 16).

About 50 people and about 20 cars took to the streets of Pasadena, Glendale and Burbank yesterday to announce support for all the things that Ron Paul stands for which are the things that we celebrate on Independence Day. We got a tremendous amount of support as we drove through town mid day and as we rocked the Pasadena Rose Bowl prior to the annual fireworks celebration.

Just an update on how the July 3rd overnight went for my area. A humble group of 3 of us started at roughly 9:30pm and targeted the Great Falls area were the fireworks go off. We covered every sign post and light pole as well as every other support rail on the bridge. We also covered a good portion of Main street in Lewiston up to the hospital, up Lisbon Street, Canal, Railroad Park and in Auburn Court Street, Main Street, Center Street and all grass areas, benches and parking lots in between were people would be hanging out. Shortly after 11 we were joined by another volunteer. We worked till about 12:45 and posted between 550 – 600 posters. I drove by the following morning to find the bridge which we worked so hard on was pretty much cleaned up. About 75% of those were gone. A side street by some pubs were also gone. Everything else was pretty much in tact. That night I saw very little of our efforts remaining but a few in key areas were still visible. Got a few curious people stop and ask what we were doing and gave them flyers to read and talked briefly. Security watching vendor tables in one park was pretty decent. We gave him information as well. I got the urge to leave one on the local IRS door and one was left on a local senators door. Over all I think we had a very enjoyable night.

I was watching Fox News Sunday this morning, 06/17/01, being hosted in the first segment by Tony Snow. The lead off guest was Colin Powell, the US Secretary of State. Mr. Powell gave an excellent recitation relevant to foreign affair matters.

Mr. Powell during the entire interview was very confident, and spoke without hesitation throughout the entire interview excluding for a one second period, after one specific statement made by him as he was talking about the Russian peoples. So for those of you who aren't really YouTube connoisseurs yet, this is the kind of stuff that goes on there. The first video is a clip from Dr. Paul's Des Moines rally on Saturday. The second one is a "video response" by "ProspectorSam" responding to that video. There are tons of people leaving video and coments all over the internet.

The internet, and video sharing and the many social networking sites--not to mention blogs--have changed the rules of the game, and Ron Paul and his people have it figured out. Of course the message helps, but the sheer number of people who can be mobilized in some way through the use of the internet is something I'm not sure has even been adequately estimated yet. I suspect Ron Paul's campaign is going to surprise some people before it's all said and done--and when it get right down to it, anything short of quitting before the New Hampshire Primary will probably surprise some. I don’t know if this is true, but it explains why the news reports bore only a passing semblance of reality with the numbers that they reported. Well the rally in Iowa was a great success. The total number of people in attendance has been a largely debated topic today, but it looks like conservatively over 1000 people rallied in support of Ron Paul. The main reason why this number is being debated is because mainstream media sources are saying 600 while people who attended claim that all 1,000 seats were filled and it was standing room only. Obviously 600 and 1000 is quite a huge difference and we know darn well that if Ron Paul's rally failed it would have been ALL OVER the news. The fact that there are only 2 or 3 mainstream media articles about the rally tell me it was largely successful. When a day before the rally, there were 30+ mainstream newspapers that picked up the headline "Ron Paul Crashes Iowa Forum", but now that his rally was successful those outlets are dead quiet. I'm just back from the Ron Paul rally at the Iowa Event Center in beautiful downtown Des Moines. Since Dr. Paul, the tax reform guru and pro-life candidate, wasn't invited to a presidential candidate's forum sponsored by the Iowans for Tax Relief and the Iowa Christian Coalition, he had his own forum right next door. Very exciting to be there. About 700 people in my estimation.

Rat Says: Early word from the Iowa Presidential Forum is that Ron Paul’s hall was standing room only(capacity 1000… 3:30 into clip 10). While the original forum that had excluded Ron and his supporters, was only able to fill 600 out of 800 seats. Sounds like the main event was a real yawn fest. Let’s see how silent the mainstream media is about this contrast.

From an attendee: Dr. Paul was in the same building as Failor’s event, except in a different room, and let me tell you, whoever said Ron Paul’s support came from a handful of internet geeks who know how to game the polls, is an idiot. This place was PACKED!
